Economic development, more and more rapid, consistent and spectacular, is accompanied by social effects at urban level, where population is increasing because of cyclic moments of economic boom. Among these effects, urban violence may be one of the most visible, having an impact on the whole society.
Preventing and fighting violence focus at different levels of urban management and many actors involved. Safer cities programs became important for urban planners, approaching housing, public spaces, infrastructure aspects. As in October the international conference on the state of safety in world cities took place, the UN Habitat Safer Cities programme provides information in this respect.
