Historic City Centres (2) – Management Plan

As it was presented in the April intervention, the complexity of historic centres revitalisation issues requires a careful planning of projects, roles and resources of each actor involved in the process. A management plan for a historic centre, actively integrated in a contemporary city, must identify and manage the changing socio-economic conditions, and community expectations, within a complex institutional environment.

IHS Romania dedicates the May topic to the historic centre of Sibiu – European Cultural Capital in 2007, where it elaborated in 2004 the management plan, together with the GTZ Sibiu Consultancy Office, and with Sibiu Municipality, as part of the nomination report for the World Heritage List.

Sibiu historic centre is, by itself, a living town, where the measures for heritage protection need to go hand in hand with considerations for the economic, social and cultural needs of the community. The elaboration process of the UNESCO Nomination Report represented an unparalleled opportunity for developing a new approach to Sibiu historic centre management by coordinating in a structured way all stakeholders and by facilitating a consensus among them regarding the preservation and socio-economic development of the site.
